Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 goes side-by-side with Note 2, S Pen and all

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 goes side-by-side with Note 2, S Pen and all

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 has yet to make its official debut, but that hasn’t stopped it from showing up in leak after leak.

The mid-sized tablet’s latest appearance comes from the French site FrAndroid, which posted photos on Friday alleging to show the Galaxy Note 8.0 alongside its little sibling, the Galaxy Note 2.

Besides the obvious opportunity for comparison here, there’s one important thing to note (pun intended): while some have been calling this rumored device the Galaxy Note 8.0, others, including FrAndroid, refer to it as the Galaxy Tab 8.0.

Of course, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, since there’s already a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0; but the point is that the name might be up in the air.

Side-by-side

Besides, the Galaxy Note 8.0 looks more like the Galaxy S3 than it does the Galaxy Tab series (like the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1) or the Note 2.

That’s aside from its signature S Pen, which appears to be fully photographed for the first time here.

It’s difficult to tell, but the white Galaxy Note 8.0 stylus looks like it could be slightly thicker than the Note 2′s pen.

Regardless, it’s interesting to see the two devices side-by-side, especially considering that the Note 8.0, based on what’s been leaked so far, appears to share its smaller brethren’s portrait orientation rather than the landscape mode of the larger Galaxy Note 10.1.

Debut at MWC

The Galaxy Note 8 is rumored to pack an 8-inch, 1280 x 800 display, a quad-core processor, 2GB of memory, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and Android Jelly Bean.

Purported photos of the medium-sized Note tablet appeared on Tuesday, then again on Thursday, when it apparently popped up on public transportation.

Of course, these could all be fake, but the Note 8.0 does seem pretty real – Samsung even confirmed it.

Samsung Mobile Communications president J.K. Shin confirmed on Monday that the Galaxy Note 8.0 would make its debut at Mobile World Congress in February.

TechRadar will be on site in Barcelona to bring you that and more news from the event.

New iPad 5 and second-generation iPad mini coming in March?

New iPad 5 and second-generation iPad mini coming in March?

Apple will refresh its iPad line in March, with a new iPad 5 and iPad mini 2, according to one analyst.

Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets is convinced that Apple is now working on a bi-annual update schedule, meaning a launch in the next couple of months.

In a note to investors, White said his checks with industry insiders at the CES expo in Las Vegas have tallied with suspicions that new 9.7-inch and 7.9-inch tablets are already on the way.

However, any March update wouldn’t be without controversy as the first iPad mini and the latest full-size iPad 4 only arrived in October 2012.

What’s new?

According to White’s sources, the new full-size iPad will be thinner and lighter than its predecessor and also boast an improved A6X processor.

The iPad mini 2, on the other hand, will keep its form-factor and improved innards.

White made no mention of the heavily-rumoured Retina Display for a second-gen iPad Mini, but we can’t imagine Apple updating this product without improving the disappointing screen resolution.

Initial iPad 4 pre-order supply runs dry

Initial iPad 4 pre-order supply runs dry

The frenzy over Apple products doesn’t seem to be slowing anytime soon as it appears Apple has sold out of its initial pre-order stock of the iPad 4.

Despite surveys relating consumer outrage at the announcement of a new tablet so soon after the iPad 3 was released, pre-release sales of the iPad 4 indicate customers are just as hungry for the new tech as they were the last time around.

It only took four days for the iPad 4 launch stock to sell out, meaning those who lagged will have to wait beyond this week to receive their new iPad if they ordered online.

Based on the iPad 4 sales page on Apple’s website, a second wave won’t be available to ship for at least one more week. In-store supplies should hold steady (at least to start) for the tablet’s debut Nov. 2.

Can’t stop, won’t stop

The iPad 4 is just the latest iOS device Apple has had trouble keeping in stock in time for its debut.

The iPhone 5 sold out in about an hour, prompting shipping delays for subsequent orders to last multiple weeks.

Similarly, the white and silver iPad Mini stock sold out in just under half that time, leaving many potential customers the choice of either the black model or a multi-week wait.

During its Oct. 23 event, Apple touted that 100 million iPads had already been sold, and that the iPad accounts for 91 percent of all tablet web traffic.

The iPad 4 was recently discovered to be twice as powerful as its predecessor, making it an even more attractive option for new and upgrading customers.

Microsoft finally attempted to curtail some of Apple’s dominance in the tablet market with the launch of its Surface tablet, and Google’s Nexus 10 should provide even more competition down the road.

For now though, consumers seemingly can’t get enough of what Apple’s selling, both figuratively and literally.

Some iPad mini pre-orders selling out, but is it demand or short supply?

Some iPad mini pre-orders selling out, but is it demand or short supply?

Apple began taking pre-orders Friday morning for its new iPad mini – but if you hit the snooze on your alarm, you might wind up receiving yours two weeks after launch.

CNET reported Friday that some variations of the mini are already in short supply, with the white and silver model out of stock for U.S. customers barely 20 minutes after pre-orders began at 12 a.m. PDT.

Apple’s online store now shows an “available to ship” date of two weeks for that particular model, which will wind up being a week or more later than the in-store date of November 2. (Wi-Fi + Cellular models are holding firm for later in the month.)

All white model versions of the smaller iPad have been pushed from a delivery date of “11/2″ to a promise to ship in the next two weeks. Black models, however, still show a Nov. 2 delivery date.

Supply and demand

While the U.S. versions seem to be selling with typical Apple-hype fervor, a look across the pond gives a different impression.

According to SlashGear, Europe appeared less eager to pre-order, with stock levels holding strong until the afternoon hours – by which time both color variants were a dispatch time of two-weeks for Wi-Fi only models.

Apple could be giving U.S. customers initial stock priority, or buyers might simply be holding out for the cellular-equipped models when those versions arrive late next month.

Pundits have taken Apple to task for pricing the iPad mini higher than Android tablet competitors, where Amazon’s Kindle Fire starts at only $159 (UK£98, AUD$153) compared to $329 (UK£269, AUD$369) for the iPad mini base model.

We may have to wait until Monday to find out if iPad mini pre-orders are actually a hit or a miss, when Apple frequently shares preorder numbers with the public – at least when business is good.
